Game's "R.E.D." Album May Be Halted By Lawsuit

Yesterday, Desperado Entertainment filed a lawsuit naming Interscope, Aftermath and Universal Music Group in a lawsuit involving a royalty dispute with Rap artist Game. The Los Angeles company alleges that UMG has not fulfilled their agreement to pay Desperado royalties from Game's album sales, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The suit, filed in a Los Angeles superior court, asserts that Desperado had a role in Game's early success, leading up to his three albums released through UMG, totalling five million units sold. The company is motioning to delay Game's August 24 release of R.E.D., in an effort to address the matter.

Game and UMG has yet to speak publicly on the matter, or move the release date.

Freeway Ricky Ross Files Lawsuit Against Rapper Rick Ross

Freeway Ricky Ross Files Lawsuit Against Rapper Rick Ross

After numerous complaints about Rick Ross’ use of his name, former drug kingpin Freeway Ricky Ross is taking action against the Miami-based rapper.

According to AllHipHop.com, an attorney for Freeway Ricky Ross filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Ross in a California Federal Court last week.

Ricky Ross claims that Rick Ross has used his name and image to garner a successful rap career.

Not only does he target Rick Ross in the lawsuit, but also rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z who signed Ross to Def Jam back in 2006. Both Jay-Z and Rick Ross may have to appear in court to testify.

The lawsuit also lists Jay-Z, Maybach Music Group, Slip-N-Slide Records, and UMG Recordings as defendants in the case.

Freeway Ricky Ross and his lawyers are also hoping to block the release of Ross’s upcoming album, Teflon Don. The album is expected to be released next month.

As many experts predicted, Drake is the latest Rap artist to achieve a #1 debut. The Young Money/Cash Money rapper's "official" first album, Thank Me Later edged out Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' latest by a margin of over 320,000 units. The Toronto born rapper's album was just over 50,000 short of a gold debut, as predicted by HitsDailyDouble.com. Thank Me Later features appearances by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, T.I. and Young Jeezy. The bulk of the album's production is handled by Drake's longtime producer Boi-1da, who may get back-to-back #1's, with next week's Eminem Recovery album.

Usher's Raymond v. Raymond fell one spot to #13. The veteran Pop entertainer's "divorce album" is marching its way to a platinum plaque for Mr. Raymond and his longtime backer, LaFace Records.

Spots #17 through #19 were taken by B.o.B., Plies and The Black Eyed Peas respectively. The Adventures of Bobby Ray will be officially over halfway to a gold plaque next week, while the year-old E.N.D. aims at possibly reaching triple platinum. Goon Affiliated pushes its way towards 100,000 sold for the Florida sensation.

Damian Marley & Nas' Distant Relatives slid to #37. The Universal Republic/Def Jam Records collaborative release has garnered huge critical acclaim in the Rap community for its rich commentary on the parallel relationship between Hip Hop and Reggae. Lil Wayne, K'Naan, Dennis Brown and Joss Stone appear on the work produced by Damian and brother Stephen. Meanwhile, Ludacris gained two notches with Battle of the Sexes.

One of the bigger surprises for the week was Gorillaz' Plastic Beach. Having been out nearly four months, the Virgin Records release climbed 59 spots on the chart. The surge is perhaps due to the third single "Rhinstone Eyes" reaching Rock radio rotation. The album includes appearances by Mos Def, De La Soul and Snoop Dogg. Drake also gained 18 spots with his retail mixtape, So Far Gone. The 2009 free mixtape-turned-album sits 15,000 away from gold certification, making Drake likely to receive two plaques in the same month.
Lil Jon fell another 50-plus spots with his Crunk Rock. After a poor debut week, the So So Def deejay-turned-Crunk star's album delays may have impacted his popularity, as well as a label change to Universal Republic.

Plea Agreement Reached In Lil Wayne's Arizona Case

Plea Agreement Reached In Lil Wayne's Arizona Case

June 21, 2010 11:45:00 AM CDT | by Danielle Harling

A plea hearing held last week has proved to be a success for rapper Lil Wayne. The YumaSun.com reports that the incarcerated rapper will likely not receive jail time for drug and weapons charges he received two years ago in Arizona.

The plea hearing took place via video feed with Lil Wayne broadcasted from his jail cell.

The rapper pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a dangerous drug and will likely be given several years probation instead of added jail time.

Because of Lil Wayne’s guilty plea the other, more serious charges including possession of a narcotic drug for sale, misconduct involving weapons, and possession of drug paraphernalia were all dropped.

Lil Wayne received the drug and weapons charges back in 2008 when his tour bus was searched by agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration. A .40-caliber pistol, almost four ounces of marijuana, an ounce of cocaine, 41 grams of Ecstasy, and other drug paraphernalia were found on the bus.

Lil Wayne is currently serving time at New York’s Riker’s Island.
