President Obama Tells Jay-Z He Loves BP3
Friday, February 19, 2010 11:58 AM
By Ismael AbduSalaam
(AllHipHop News) Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 album has received its biggest endorsement via President Barack Obama. In a recent interview with BBC One, Jay-Z disclosed that the President loved the LP and was playing it during their recent phone conversation.
“Barack loves Hip-Hop, when I called him he was playing Blueprint in the gym,” he explained. “I've been invited to the White House a couple of times. Hopefully we'll keep him in for 8 years so I'll have time to get there."
Obama has been a self-admitted Hip-Hop fan for years, and first met Jay-Z in 2008 as part of his goal to help emcees use their art to spark critical thinking and bridge generational rifts.
Also, the then U.S. senator was hopeful to see Hip-Hop artists as a whole move away from the misogyny and materialistic slant that’s gripped the art form’s mainstream in recent years.
“I've met with Jay-Z, I've met with Kanye [West]. And I've talked to other artists about how potentially to bridge that gap. I think the potential for them to deliver a message of extraordinary power that gets people thinking [is great],"Obama told BET on the special What’s In It For Us? “There are times, even on the artists I've named, the artists that I love, that there is a message that's sometimes degrading to women, uses the N-word a little too frequently. But also something that I'm really concerned about is they're always talking about material things about how I can get something; more money, more cars.”
Jay-Z acknowledged the Hip-Hop nation’s potential political power, but rejected the notion that artists should tone down their messages. Instead, he insisted that artists have a responsibility to speak on the uncomfortable truths of society, and not relegate their art to propaganda.
"Sometimes there are hard truths in rap, they're not packaged with pretty ribbons. Sometimes the realities of the situations are harsh and they need to be told,” Jay reasoned to the BBC. “We're the poets of our generation! Those truths and those honesties need to be told and sometimes that will rub people the wrong way but that don't mean you don't tell them. I think when rap is done brilliantly it can inform you of a problem, things that are going on."
Even as the pro-Obama Hip-Hop songs slowed following the President’s January 2009 inauguration, Jay-Z has remained one of his strongest supporters.
The Brooklyn native spoke favorably of Obama throughout Blueprint 3, including the songs “What We Talkin’ About,” “On to the Next One,” and “Reminder.”
Today (February 19), President Obama will hold a town hall meeting at Nevada’s Henderson high school, followed by speaking engagements at the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

By Ace Cannon
ShareThisGet Alerts Lil Wayne had a marathon surgery session this morning to fix his teeth prior to a year-long stint in jail, which is scheduled to start on March 2. The rapper was slated to be sentenced to jail on February 9 in New York, for attempted criminal possession of a weapon over a July 2008 incident. The sentence was delayed so Lil Wayne could have his platinum "grillz" removed. Additionally, he received eight root canals, had several tooth implants redone and had various real teeth repaired during the eight hour session.

TMZ.com reports that Sky Blu attempted to lean his seat back while the plane was still on the tarmac. Romney allegedly became enraged and started yelling for him to put his seat back up. Sky Blu allegedly smacked the former presidential candidate’s hand off of him. Authorities then boarded the plan and removed the rapper off of the flight. According to reports, LMFAO videotaped the entire incident. Representatives for Romney denied Sky Blu’s claim and stated that he was the aggressor.

L.E.P. Bogus Boys Explain Chicago Rap Diversity, Gang Culture
February 20, 2010 12:02:00 AM CST | by Jake Paine
The L.E.P. Bogus Boys have spawned from a street movement throughout the last decade. The Chicago trio of Count, Moonie and Bigg Rugg remains unsigned, but the group from the Harold Ickes Housing Projects is already getting support from national acts ranging from Jim Jones to Yukmouth ("Yellow Tape" ).
Count, with a quiet Moonie, spoke to HipHopDX recently to talk about their contribution to the Windy City's Rap legacy. "To be honest with you, I think we're in a different lane - the new class of valedictorians of this slab," Count asserts. "There's a lot of people that might be graduating, or have graduated, but we're the valedictorians of this new era. You've heard from a lot of genres and styles out of Chicago, but you still haven't heard from our environment, which has actually influenced all facets of life - from the gang culture to whatever."
The Low End Professionals have a history tied to the streets. Moonie recently returned from a five-year prison sentence. Count says that based on history alone, Chicago deserves a place in the lineage of Gangsta Rap. "Crips and Bloods, all that started in Chicago. A guy by the name of T. Rodgers took it to L.A. in '67, '68, somewhere around there. And it blew up. [Rap listeners] have heard from every element but the streets." With songs about hustling, robbery and the decayed surroundings of some of Chicago's neglected neighborhoods, the streets are alive in L.E.P. Bogus Boys' music.
Count still recognizes the acts that have before him, and explained to DX some of the city's geographic affects on the genre. "You've got two sides of the city: the Southside and the Westside. That's a Westside sound when they kind of twist their tongues, like Twista, Do Or Die and Crucial Conflict." Count mimics the syncopated flow that was birthed on the Westside before adding, "You would like to say that Kanye [West] is from the Southside, Common's from the Southside, No I.D. is from the Southside. You've got two different sections that's breeding two different sounds. It's all from one Chicago though."
Although the trio is definitely Gangsta Rap, Count, with Moonie agreeing in the background, recognizes the differences between the street organizations of yesteryear and today. "They had a cause and a reason back then. Now, it's just something to do." He continues, "Back then, gangs were started with a purpose and a reason - to protect blacks in our neighborhoods from the white police officers and the whites that would come into the neighborhood and beat blacks up, or do us any kind of way. Gangs defended us. When they started putting drugs and money into the community, which we were not accustomed to, it turned to something else. It birthed greed and selfishness."
The Low End Professionals hope to end that greed and selfishness. The group pounds their chest in proclaiming that they remain primary sources for street science at a time when Hip Hop uses hearsay to talk about dirt. Moreover, Count says that he and his brothers are the voice for the uncounted heads of both their city and the nation.
Rooted in Chicago, the unsigned act has been performing the States for the last several years. In particular, the group has a large following in North California. "From Oxnard to Oakland," says the unofficial leader, recalling doing spot date shows consistently for $2,500 to build a base. Count admits that the show fees may have been small, but those early appearances were seed money for the L.E.P. to purchase tour vans, before recently purchasing a tour bus.
With six videos shot between January 1 and February 1 of this year, the L.E.P. movement pushes hard into the new year. "The labels better put their money where their mouth is," says a confident Count. The group is already functioning better than some of the competition without the paperwork.

Public Enemy Struggles To Maintain Fan Investors For Album
February 19, 2010 08:02:00 PM CST | by Salima Koroma
When Public Enemy first announced in October that they would be utilizing fans as a resource to fund their $250,000 album, the idea was met with skepticism. According to Billboard.com however, by the end of December, the group had raised $71,000 through Sellaband.com, a website which allows fans to make investments in artist's projects.
Yet, the success of the fan-funded venture ended there. Since reaching the amount of $71K, the project has lost investors who have taken a total of $4,000 along with them. Although PE has raised far more money than other groups through the website, the amount that each of their fans invests is quite low compared to others, due to unappealing incentives. For example, while a $100 investment offers investors a CD, a credit in the booklet, and an extra CD at half-price, a $250 investment adds in only a Public Enemy limited edition T-shirt.
Since December, Public Enemy has slowed down on updating its Sellaband page. The duo may be struggling to reach their $250,000 goal, however there is no word yet on if the project will scrapped.

Dres of Black Sheep Readies Release Of New Album, From The Black Pool of Genius 02.18.2010
Legendary MC Recruits Impressive Roster Of Guests For Full Length Album
(February 18, 2010 - Brooklyn, NY) With his first proper full length album since 2006, Dres of the legendary Queens outfit Black Sheep is gearing up to once again command the airwaves with the April 6th release of his highly anticipated album, From The Black Pool Of Genius. In an effort to holdover his insatiable fans while finishing up the LP, Dres released the five song EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude to much fanfare in December. The EP served as a promising precursor of what fans can expect from the upcoming album, and since its release Dres has been hard at work in the lab perfecting his sound.
Unlike The Prelude, The From The Black Pool Of Genius LP finds Dres enlisting a handful of his hip-hop brethren to elevate the album to the next level. "I would say the major difference [between The Prelude and LP] is the entourage of songs on the LP come with many guests which brings a nice variety to the spices already being served" says Dres. Production duties are handled by Paten Locke, Tough Junkie, BeanOne, ShowBiz, the Beatnuts, and Urban Soul Group, producers of "Forever LuvLee," the only hold over track from the EP, all of who manage to season some new flavor onto the songs while keeping right in tune with Dres' signature sound. The album also boasts performances from lyrical heavyweights AZ, Rhymefest, and Jean Grae, who are all on hand to drop notable guest verses and showcase their verbal dexterity, as well as an appearance from P&V, who provide an R&B touch for the project. A rare Native Tongue's bonus track featuring Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, Dave of De La Soul and Mike G of the Jungle Brothers rounds out Dres' sonic serving of genius.
As one of the most respected and insightful voices in music today, Dres is using the album as means of communicating his beliefs about the meaning of hip-hop. "I once heard a poet say that 'hip hop backward is 'pih poh (people)'- the way I see it, many artists are a lot more hip-hop than they ever realized." As for the album title, Dres explains that, "Black Pool doesn’t refer to black people. It refers to the color black's unique ability to absorb light. This deep, vast pool of soul, of artistic insight; although it's not always understood, the light it reflects back to the 'pih-poh' is necessary." Hip-hop heads are ready and anxiously awaiting to see the light. Dres' From The Black Pool of Genius full length will be available April 6th.
Also, be sure to catch Dres in action as he hits the stage with Serius Jones, Shinobi Ninja and Peter Hadar at Mexicali Live tonight, February 18 at 7:30PM. Located at 1409 Queen Anne Road in Teaneck, NJ, the venue promises to deliver an electrifying genre-spanning night of sounds from the worlds of hip-hop, punk rock and electronica.
Check out, "I Wanna Rock," the first of Dres' Hot Track Of The Week series, which will feature Dres spitting a 16 over current instrumentals: http://media.audibletreats.com/Dres-I_Wanna_Rock_Freestyle.mp3

The Background:
It all began with a thundering baseline and an unmistakably classic phrase - "this or that." One of the most widely recognized songs in rap music history, the 1991 classic "The Choice is Yours" was hailed by VH1 in 2008 as one of the best rap songs of all time. The highly respected Queens emcee Dres, along with DJing partner-in-crime William "Mista Lawnge" McLean took the music industry by storm in the early 1990's as part of the groundbreaking collective Native Tongues. Penning such Billboard standouts as "Flavor of the Month" and "Strobelight Honey" for the duo's platinum-selling debut album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing in 1992, Dres would continue to crank out the hits on the group's second release, Non Fiction. After a brief reunion with Mister Lawnge in 2000, Dres again set his sights on recording. He released the innovative online-only album 8WM/Novakane in 2007. Now he's back in the studio, writing the next chapter of his storied career. Dres' highly anticipated new project, From the Black Pool of Genius, out Spring 2010, promises to pair thought-provoking lyrics with astounding beats constructed by a corps of new and established beatmakers. They include Bean One, Showbiz, Tough Junkie, P. Locke, Urban Soul Music Group, and Willie Evans. He's also got an impressive line-up of guest stars, including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Rhymefest, AZ, and Tough Junkie, among others. Leading up to the release of his next full-length, Black Sheep have released a precursor EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude, available now. From The Black Pool Of Genius will be available on April 6th.
News: Birdman's Oil & Natural Gas Venture Under Fire, Williams Brothers Decline To Comment
Thursday, Feb 18, 2010 10:30AM
Written by Biz Jones
The legitimacy of Cash Money Records co-founder Birdman's new Bronald Oil & Gas Company is now being questioned.
According to reports, the company's locations and listings have not been verified.
As for what Bronald is doing in the oil and natural-gas business, the Williams brothers declined through their publicist, Kia Selby, to comment. Selby said she was unable to provide information about the oil company. Bronald doesn't have a listed telephone number. Numbers for residences in New Orleans and Florida that are linked to Bronald in state records don't take incoming calls. (Bloomberg)
Officials within the oil industry have also reportedly denied its knowledge of Bronald Oil.
Further reports by Bloomberg show that the oil company is listed as serving oil to Oklahoma, Florida and New Orleans, but Oklahoma's oil industry authority claimed to have never heard of such a company and said that they have never partnered with Bronald Oil & Gas LLC. Records in Oklahoma also list the address for the corporation to be a beach front condo in Florida. This all doesn't add up to be a good scenario for Bronald especially since they just launched. (Woooha)
Earlier this month, Birdman confirmed his venture into the oil industry.
"I've been in the oil business about 4 or 5 years now," he revealed in an interview. "That's something me and my brother decided to do outside of music. I read about oil a lot and I was able to get in business. [My company] is called Browner Oil, and I'm making good money off that; that's something for my kids and my kids' kids. They can live off that money forever. I did a few different deals. That was just one of them. When you're dealing with oil, you buy in different areas. Right now I'm active; I got pumps and sh*t that are getting money monthly. I like that oil sh*t. I'm gonna put some more time into it." (Ozone Magazine)
Reports of the venture began to circulate online last month.
Bronald Oil & Gas are using several locations to develop oil and gas outlets, such as Osage County, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and unidentified Central America sites. The Williams brothers have issued a mission statement which lists key initiatives which they believe will be instrumental in developing oil and gas energy production in the 21st century: Forming strategic alliances with other operators to leverage their respective experience and strengths on development. Forming partnerships with service, equipment and technology companies. By partnering with such companies, some of our fields may be designated as "testing ground" for new and developing technologies. Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 2/14/2010
February 17, 2010 03:02:00 PM CST | by Allen Jacobs
Sade soldiered through with her Soldier Of Love. The 51 year-old Nigerian singer not only debuted at #1, but she scanned over 500,000 first week domestic units. The Sony release, her first album in a decade shocked the charts this week, as Sade is still getting radio adds and doing limited press. The Soul/Jazz vocalist is said to be appearing on Drake's Thank Me Later later this year, her first Rap album appearance since 2001's "Hard Time Hustlin'" with Krayzie Bone.
Split between bumped Country/Pop act Lady Antebellum, another R&B star debuted at #3. Atlantic Records' Jaheim's Another Round performed strongly, selling over 100,000 copies. The 31 year-old New Jersey native's album features Jadakiss on the "Ain't Leavin' Without You (Remix)" from his fifth album.
Lil Wayne's Rebirth sold under 100,000 second-week units. The Cash Money/Universal Motown artist will remain a free man from a postponed sentencing to Riker's Island Correctional Facility, but Wayne's limited in marketing the Rock-inspired album largely produced by Cool & Dre.
The Black Eyed Peas are officially double platinum. The E.N.D. just introduced a new single, "Imma Be Rocking That Body," as Interscope may find a new one-two punch to go along with Eminem in Rap/Pop sales. Alicia Keys' Element Of Freedom also officially crossed the platinum mark, which all three of her previous albums have done.

“We Are The World” Tops iTunes Most Downloaded, Jay-Z Speaks On Remake
February 15, 2010 01:02:00 PM CST | by Danielle Harling
Following the premiere of the “We Are The World: 25 For Haiti” music video on February 12, the video received a tremendous amount of criticism from blogger’s, people on online communities such as Twitter, and more.
Despite the flurry of negative criticism as of today (February 15) the song is now the top downloaded song on iTunes.
Although the 2010 re-make of Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World” included a number of well-known artists, there were a few major artist’s who chose not to take part in the song. Among them was rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z.
In an interview with MTV at a NBA All-Star weekend event, Jay-Z revealed why he didn’t take part in “We Are The World: 25 For Haiti.”
“I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: 'We Are the World,' I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great,” Jay-Z explained. “But I think 'We Are the World' is like [Michael Jackson's] 'Thriller' to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched…So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but 'We are the World' is [musically] untouchable like 'Thriller' is untouchable.”
Jay-Z also told MTV that creating a new song would have been better than mimicking Michael Jackson’s 1985 “We Are The World.”
"I would have loved that idea better," said Jay-Z. "As everyone knows, I have tremendous respect for Quincy Jones. Of course, I think he's genius, as everyone else does. [But] I think it's time for us to make a new [song].

Messy Marv To Release 12-Disc Album "Project Superstar"
February 15, 2010 10:02:00 AM CST | by Jake Paine
Fillmore, California veteran rapper Messy Marv has been releasing albums for almost 15 years. The SMC Records artist has done full-length collaborations with San Quinn, Guce and Mitchy Slick, but nothing in his career rivals what Marv recently told website BayCentrik.com.
Confirming that a long-rumored 12-disc release was indeed on the way, Marv told the site about his reasoning for releasing over half a day's worth of music in one chunk. Called Project Superstar, Marv is self-releasing the collection to his legions of longtime supporters. "It's one of them albums that I'm doing just strictly for all the online heads, the Internet heads," he told BayCentrik.com. "I'm trying to build my online presence so I'm giving them a special package for supporting me for so long. A 12 disc album for a little bit of nothing, you know? You have to log onto ScalenLLC.com to get it."
Scalen is the name of Marv's recently-launched clothing line. In December, Messy Marv released his Highly Aggressive Volume 1 mixtape digitally.
