Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 6/6/2010

There were no new Rap releases entering the Top 200 this past week. If anything, last week's numbers were nearly repeated, though some of the rankings shifted. The top of the charts were held by singer/songwriter Jack Johnson and his To The Sea album. Hip Hop fans may know Johnson from his work with Prince Paul and Dan The Automator's second Handsome Boy Modeling School album, White People. Usher's Raymond v. Raymond held the #5 spot for a second straight week. The veteran Pop entertainer's "divorce album" is marching its way to a platinum plaque for Mr. Raymond and his longtime backer, LaFace Records.

B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray returned to its #13 spot from two weeks ago. The Rebel Rock sensation cleared 200,000 units, making him the most successful Atlantic Records Rap release in over six months. Damian Marley & Nas' Distant Relatives fell nine spots to #18. The Universal Republic/Def Jam Records collaborative release has garnered huge critical acclaim in the Rap community for its rich commentary on the parallel relationship between Hip Hop and Reggae. Lil Wayne, K'Naan, Dennis Brown and Joss Stone appear on the work produced by Damian and brother Stephen.

Just ahead of Nas and Jr. Gong, The Black Eyed Peas and their nearly year-old E.N.D. were at #17, and remain a potential consistent climber in this sales drought. Another 2009 release, Alicia Keys' Element of Freedom was included with the top five Rap/R&B sellers at #29. It was announced last week that the songstress and Swizz Beatz will be having their first child.

Ludacris climbed four spots to #32 with Battle of the Sexes. The DTP/Def Jam album remains the imprint's most successful 2010 album to date, and carries itself towards a gold plaque, possibly due by mid-summer. With Thank Me Later coming to the charts in two weeks, it's to be noted that Drake's mixtape-turned-retail album So Far Gone is on the cusp of going gold. With artists like T.I. and Lupe Fiasco having catalog album sales climb during new releases, Drake may garner two gold plaques this summer.

Trina's Pop-inspired album, Amazin' sold less than 5,000 units last week, still remaining in the top half of the charts. The Diamond Princess' independent release boasts backing by EMI Records, similar to releases by Raekwon and Twista last year. Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek as Reflection Eternal's Revolutions Per Minute fell to #104 in its third week on shelves. Despite some high critical praise, the decade-anticipated reunion album still sits short of 35,000 units sold.

June 08, 2010 11:39:00 AM CDT | by Jake Paine

Due July 6, Big Boi's Sir Luscious Left Foot: Son Of Chico Dusty officially released its tracklisting today. The OutKast emcee's second solo album will be his first with Def Jam, reuniting him with mentor, Antonio "L.A." Reid. With single "Shutterbugg" making its rotation into commercial radio and MTV Jams, Daddy Fat Sax will enlist T.I., Khujo Goodie, Sleepy Brown of Organized Noize, Jamie Foxx, and Gucci Mane on Sir Luscious.

Additionally, DXnext alumni Yelawolf and Purple Ribbon's Janelle Monae also make appearances with the veteran Georgia emcee.

UPDATE: Just hours after the tracklisting was revealed by Def Jam yesterday, GQ.com asked Big Boi in-depth about the notable absence of his OutKast partner from Sir Luscious Left Foot.

"Basically it boils down to Jive Records," explained Big Boi. "That's how they do it. Jive Records told me my album is a piece of art, and they didn't know what to do with it. So I moved it over to Def Jam. And now Jive is trying to block Dré from being on my record. We can't be on songs together now."

As the conversation continues, Daddy Fat Sax explains how he will treat fans, by way of Internet leaks, to the music he and his 'Kast partner did make during SLLF sessions.

Kanye West's Porsche Totaled In Car Crash

News: Kanye West's Porsche Totaled In Car Crash

Sunday, Jun 6, 2010 9:58AM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West's Porsche Panamera car was reportedly involved in a major accident over the weekend after crashing into a resident's home in Hawaii.

According to reports, the accident took place on Saturday (June 5).

Chris Cooper said he was shaken out of bed at around four o'clock Saturday morning by the loud noise. "Just a tremendous crash. As if a small building were coming down," said Cooper, who lives across the street from the crash scene. Cooper thought something had happened on Diamond Head Road until he stepped outside. "I looked over here and saw the car impaled in the garage," he said. The garage door to the home was pushed in and there was a large, gaping hole in the side of the garage wall. Honolulu police said the Porsche Panamera that was found at the scene is registered to rap star Kanye West. They said the car was being driven along Hibiscus Drive when it failed to make a right turn. (KITV News)

Additional details on what went down have also circulated online.

The residence is undergoing construction and was unoccupied at the time. Police had difficulty pulling the car from the home. West has been renting a home in Honolulu, where he is recording his fifth album, but was not on the island at the time of the incident. Sources told KITV that his cousin had permission to drive the car, and witnesses said they saw three men fleeing the scene after the crash. An auto theft report was filed with police. (Rap-Up)

In addition to working on his 808's & Heartbreak album in Hawaii, the rapper has recently been rumored to be collaborating with artists like Drake and Pusha T on the tropical island.

Fuse TV's, Toure had a conversation with an individual who received a sneak peek at the rapper's new project and got wind of some DOPE information. According to Toure, RZA, Q-Tip and Pete Rock have all contributed to Yeezy's new effort. It's also been said that Pusha T from the Clipse and Drake have taken trips down to Hawaii (that's where he's creating the new album) to assist Ye with the new project. (BET's Sound Off)

G.O.O.D. Music's Fonzworth Bently recently confirmed Ye has been spending time in Hawaii working on new music.

"[Kanye] was trying to get me to come out the Hawaii last week," Fonz said in a February 2010 interview. "That's where he's recording. But my schedule wouldn't permit. I'm going to try my best to get out there before February's out." (VIBE)

No further details have been revealed as of now.
